TOTP-wise, it survives in two slightly different performances - one with audience shots imposed on it, an insert from 7/10/71 but with an off-camera JS intro, and the same John Peel & Footbal performance without the audience shots dubbed on, from the 27th December 71 editionChris Retrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14326331395126100697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7026409546307773708.post-27762964844260276052013-12-22T12:18:42.084+00:002013-12-22T12:18:42.084+00:00They can shove their linkless shows up their arses...They can shove their linkless shows up their arses - I notice that alot of folk are getting rid of their TV's or, at least, NOT paying the license ! Both editions still exist in the BBC archive.
Ten Years Of Pops was a look back at 10 years of TOTP with some archive clips - and it must have been apparent to the producers there was next to nothing... yet still the wipings continued en masse for another 4 years. I don't like to quote the Guardian, because they are quite as silly as every other news outlet, but I recently saw an article where they compared a typical 70s/early 80s Christmas viewing fare to what we have now.

I wold have been watching as an early teen in the mid 80s and I well recall what was available to me: Russian Ballet at prime hours (albeit on BBC 2!), foreign films which are simply not shown any more (too hard to cope with sub-titles), superb costume drama that understood the period (no daft concessions to modern taste) and comedy that was both compassionate and fiercely accurate at the same time (Porridge, Citizen Smith, Rising Damp).

There is no comparison nowadays. These stories are creepy and atmospheric. Note the time they put it on in 1973 - 11.35 at night so u had the real creepy stuff at midnight. The TV schedules these days are crap as is most of the progs but I keep me telly on the off chance summat good comes on ! Would have been five or six years too young to have watched at the time, even assuming we had a TV, (which was not from want of the readies but because we lived in an area of the UK which was at that time off the grid - yes, they existed).

BTW, I loved the Ghost Stories. I tracked down "Lost Hearts" on You Tube some months ago because I remembered the original broadcast and my feelings of profound and subtle terror. It stands up. In some ways, more desperately affecting now than then, not despite but because of the creaky production values. They could do so much with so little because we still had faith in the human imagination.

Merry Xmas, lads.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10414331811283042896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7026409546307773708.post-72857927790479955702013-12-20T20:50:41.486+00:002013-12-20T20:50:41.486+00:00" Anyone who can work out what Jimmy says in ..."
